Literacy Challenge Winners!

As our Year Five pupils performed so well at this competition, rather than writing this article myself, I asked them to! So here it is:

Four pupils from York road were selected to go to Swan Valley Community School to take part in a Literacy challenge. Ben Dobinson, Caleb Fisher, Bethany Bridge & Leela Dookhurrun.

Mrs. Brown & Miss Le-Blonde were the teachers who guided & judged them through this process.

Throughout the morning the children were rewarded with hero chocolates.

The four challenges were about sport as Swan Valley specializes in that area.

The first challenge was a sports quiz. The children got six out of the ten questions correct and were narrowly beaten by manor who got eight.

The next was a ‘Guess who’ game about famous sports people. The children came second again and were still beaten by manor.

The third challenge was to write a commentary for a tennis match between Federer and Roddick. Due to Ben’s awesome descriptions they came first in this.

The final challenge was to write a description about a full Wembly stadium. They wrote the longest by far but would it be enough? Yes! They came first and with an overall score of eighteen points, claimed the first place medallion and trophy!!!

We are all very proud of our champions here at York Road. Well done!

Year 5 Cam Toys

Here’s a report from one of our Year Five pupils:

In May and June Yr 5 went to the Leigh Accademy to make cam toys. First we has to make the designs at school. We had two visits.  We had a piece of mdf and has to drill some holes. Then we had to cut out the shape for the top of the design.  When we got back to school we had to decorate them with paint, pencil or felt-tip pens ready for the next visit.  When we returned we had to make the cam mechanism, and nail on the acrylic.  Once that was done we could take them back to school.  It was really enjoyable for everyone. It showed us what a workshop was like in a secondary school, and gave us an idea what it will be like when we are in yr 7.

What a Display!

The children have been working hard on some delightful displays that have been going up around the school. We thought you might like to see some of them… (click on each picture to make it bigger)
