Year 6 Leavers Party

Very many thanks to all the parents for once again putting on a fantastic party for all of our “superstars” in Year Six… A wonderful evening was had by all!

Literacy Challenge Winners!

As our Year Five pupils performed so well at this competition, rather than writing this article myself, I asked them to! So here it is:

Four pupils from York road were selected to go to Swan Valley Community School to take part in a Literacy challenge. Ben Dobinson, Caleb Fisher, Bethany Bridge & Leela Dookhurrun.

Mrs. Brown & Miss Le-Blonde were the teachers who guided & judged them through this process.

Throughout the morning the children were rewarded with hero chocolates.

The four challenges were about sport as Swan Valley specializes in that area.

The first challenge was a sports quiz. The children got six out of the ten questions correct and were narrowly beaten by manor who got eight.

The next was a ‘Guess who’ game about famous sports people. The children came second again and were still beaten by manor.

The third challenge was to write a commentary for a tennis match between Federer and Roddick. Due to Ben’s awesome descriptions they came first in this.

The final challenge was to write a description about a full Wembly stadium. They wrote the longest by far but would it be enough? Yes! They came first and with an overall score of eighteen points, claimed the first place medallion and trophy!!!

We are all very proud of our champions here at York Road. Well done!

World War 2 Day

The children are currently enjoying their World War 2 themed day. They all looked wonderful in their costumes this morning when they have had a quiz, drill practice and looked at where the war took place. They have also looked at guns, gas masks and other artefacts.
This afternoon, we are anticipating an air raid! But hopefully there will be plenty of fun and games, 1940s-style, in the “shelter”.

Bag2School Day

We are having a Bag2School Day to help raise funds for the school on the 21st May 2010!

Help us raise money by sorting your cupboards and wardrobes.  Every child will receive a collection bag on the 14th May.  Fill your bag with any unwanted textiles, shoes, belts, bags, soft toys, curtains etc.  Bags are to be brought to school on the  21st May 2010 from 8.30am to 2.30pm. MORE DETAILS TO FOLLOW!

Writing Workshop

On 16th & 17th March, 2010 three pupils took part  in Writing Workshops at Temple Hill School.  Thomas Fisher (Thames), Billy Lowman (Ash) and Stephanie White (Oak) were lucky enough to work with famous authors Chris Powling and Denis Bond.

During the two days the pupils worked alongside pupils from other Dartford primary schools and took part in drama, discussions and writing. The authors were very enthusiastic and inspired the children to write a story on a subject of their choice.

Throughout the two days all the pupils had time to share their writing with the authors and generate new ideas together. All three pupils worked very hard and at various points in the day had their writing read aloud for everyone to enjoy!

Well done to all three pupils. It was a wonderful opportunity and a memorable experience.
Once the stories are complete they may even be published in a book! So watch out for their names in print.

Year Six Leavers’ Party 2010

What a civilised bunch of individuals!

What a civilised bunch of individuals... Will this year's party be as successful? Only with your help!

We held a brief meeting during the open afternoon to try to get support for this event. This event is run entirely by the year 6 parents and therefore we do need your support. We would like to thank the parents who did turn up for this meeting but it was a disappointing turn out as only 16 parents attended. We will need more help for this event to go ahead and would be pleased if you are able to help that you contact the school office with your name and contact number. We will need help with organising, purchasing (funds available), fetching and carrying, setting up, helping on the night, and clearing away.

Dress up as a runner day!

(also known as non-uniform day)

Children with Leukaemia is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to fighting Britain’s biggest childhood cancer.

Mr. Ankrah (Year 5 Ash Class Teacher) will be running this year’s London Marathon to raise money for this cause.

If you would like to sponsor this event then please give your contribution to your child and add these details: (if you would like the charity to collect gift-aid on your sponsorship) name, first line of home address, postcode and the amount given

The children can dress up in running clothes (or other non-uniform if you can’t find any inspiration to dress like a runner!) on Friday April 23rd in honour of Mr. Ankrah’s attempt at the marathon. We wish him lots of luck!

French Story Telling Session

French Story TellingYear 3 and children from the Star Centre were entertained for an hour on Monday 29th March by an actress from Freshwater Theatre, who performed two fairy tales in French.
Some children helped with the acting, all children helped with the singing. The stories were Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Three Little Pigs. It was great fun and we are lucky to have so many talented children.
Unbelievably the whole performance was in French with children discovering that the ‘animatrice’ Martina could actually speak English only at the very end of the session!
Well done to all Year 3s and The Star Centre.
