French Story Telling Session

French Story TellingYear 3 and children from the Star Centre were entertained for an hour on Monday 29th March by an actress from Freshwater Theatre, who performed two fairy tales in French.
Some children helped with the acting, all children helped with the singing. The stories were Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Three Little Pigs. It was great fun and we are lucky to have so many talented children.
Unbelievably the whole performance was in French with children discovering that the ‘animatrice’ Martina could actually speak English only at the very end of the session!
Well done to all Year 3s and The Star Centre.

Mathematical Activities to help Year 6 with Revision

Our Year Six children (and parents!) might enjoy, and would certainly benefit from, playing these revision games. Originally this was provided as a CD-ROM, but rather than spend a fortune on blank discs, we have decided to make this available via our website.

To access the games, CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE ZIP FILE and save to your computer.

Then, open the file and locate the Internet Explorer icon called Mathematical Activities for Year 6. (If your default browser is something other than Internet Explorer, it may show as that instead.)

Double-clicking this will take you to the main menu for the games, which you can then choose from. Enjoy!

Open Afternoon for parents

On Tuesday 30th March we are holding an open afternoon in which we would like to invite all parents and carers to visit your child’s classroom and look at examples of work and displays.  This is not a formal parents’ consultation but a chance to chat with your child about their favourite school activities. The open afternoon will run from 2.45 until 5pm.  We have taken on board feedback from the previous open afternoon and are extending the times to cater for working parents.  We hope that this will be an informal opportunity for you to share some of your child’s successes and achievements.

French visitors have been to York Road!

French visitors

Yorkie Bear enjoyed seeing Flic Floc again after all this time!

Our visitors arrived in time for Assembly and then spent the morning in classes.

The theme for the lessons was ‘games’. Some York Road children had invented their own games while others taught the French children some traditional English games like hopscotch and 4Square.

After lunch the School Council members accompanied the French visitors to The Civic Centre for an audience with the Worshipful Mayor of Dartford, Mrs Jennifer Rickford.

There they were able to sit in the Council Chamber and to ask questions about her role. We are very grateful to the staff at the Civic Centre for their warm welcome.

Back at school Mme Brigitte Shrubsall presented a plaque from Valenciennes to Mrs Reynolds on behalf of her school as a memento of their visit.

Then it was back to classes for gingerbread men and a last chance to swap e mail addresses and contact details with new friends.

Although very busy the staff and children felt it was a very successful day.

More photos to follow!

Crazy Hair Day!

Crazy Hair!On Wednesday 11th February, staff and children came into school sporting crazy hair, to raise money for the Haiti earthquake appeal. Altogether, we raised £334.52… So thank you to everyone who took part!

French visitors coming to York Road

51 pupils from Ecole Jean Froissart and 8 staff are joining the pupils and staff of York Road for the day. The French children are spending the week at nearby HMS Arethusa and we are delighted that they can find time to come to our school. We are looking forward to repaying the kindness they showed us when we went to Valenciennes back in June 2009. The press has already reported on the visit – see the link below. Next week the French children will be spending the morning in class then visiting Dartford town Centre (including an audience with the Mayor at the Civic Centre) in the afternoon.
