YORK ROAD LANGUAGE UNIT (THE STAR CENTRE)
For children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs
The Star Centre consists of 4 teaching rooms, 3 therapy rooms, a computer suite, a quiet room, an outside play area and offices.
The Star Centre has provision for 40 children with a primary diagnosis of Speech, Language and Communication Needs on their Statement of Special Educational Needs. Age ranges are from 4 to 11 years and admission is through the Local Authority.
Children are based in 4 classes called Sun, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. Each class has 10 pupils with a Specialist Teacher and 2 Teaching Assistants. The full National Curriculum is followed but is modified by level and pace from that of a mainstream school. Children are ability set for Numeracy and Literacy. Every child is assessed on entry and has an Individual Education Plan with time-bonded targets which parents are invited to contribute to at termly parents evenings. An Annual Review is held every year and parents help to set yearly targets.
All children receive Speech and Language Therapy every week either individually or in groups. The Teaching Teams and Speech and Language Therapists work closely to ensure a co-ordinated approach to children’s learning.
Many of our pupils come to school in taxis from a wide catchment area. Regular communication is maintained with parents via a home/school diary, and parents are welcome to phone or visit if the need arises. Parents are asked to support their child’s learning at home by helping to complete homework each evening. Parents can also support the Language Unit by being active members of Language Unit Parents Association (LUPA) now affiliated with the Friends’ Association and by attending activities and social events.
For further information on admissions please contact the Star Centre directly on 01322 22 86 69.
